Kaal Sarp Dosha

What Kaal Sarp dosha is, how it is formed by Rahu and Ketu, the 12 named types by Rahu's house, and why many astrologers treat it with caution.

Short answer

Kaal Sarp dosha is said to form when all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn sit on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis in a Kundali, hemmed between the two nodes. It is read as a chart in which life feels like a series of delays followed by sudden turns. Not every school accepts it as a real dosha, and those that do list partial forms and cancelling conditions, so the pattern alone is not a verdict.

How it forms

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, 180 degrees apart. Draw a line between them and you split the chart in half. If all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn fall within one half, the chart is called Kaal Sarp. If even one planet falls in the other half, it is not.

The AnkShakti Kundali tests exactly this and tells you which planets are on which side.

The 12 named types

The type is named by the house in which Rahu sits: Anant in the 1st, Kulik in the 2nd, Vasuki in the 3rd, Shankhpal in the 4th, Padma in the 5th, Mahapadma in the 6th, Takshak in the 7th, Karkotak in the 8th, Shankhachur in the 9th, Ghatak in the 10th, Vishdhar in the 11th and Sheshnag in the 12th.

Each type is linked by tradition with a different area of life, matching the house Rahu occupies. The labels are a naming convention that helps priests and astrologers talk about the chart.

A balanced view

Many astrologers question Kaal Sarp as a classical dosha, since it does not appear in the oldest texts in this exact form. Others use it widely. Chart readers also note that a planet very close to the node, or one that has moved just across the axis, can change the reading.

A practical approach is to treat it as a theme to be aware of, then look at the whole chart and the dasha running at the time.

What to do with the result

If your chart shows it, look at the strength of the Moon, Jupiter and the dasha lord before drawing any conclusion. Remedies differ by family and region. None is needed for the chart to be read, and nothing in the Kundali is a guarantee either way.

Common questions

Is Kaal Sarp dosha real?
It is a widely used idea in Indian astrology, though not every classical school recognises it. It is best read as a pattern, not a certainty.
Does Kaal Sarp dosha affect marriage?
Tradition links some of the 12 types with delays or friction in relationships. The chart cannot say what will happen to two real people.
Can the dosha be cancelled?
Several conditions are listed, such as a planet sitting outside the node axis or strong benefics in the chart. They vary by lineage.
How do I check it on my own Kundali?
Make your chart and open the Doshas section. It reports whether all seven planets sit between Rahu and Ketu.
