The rule
Find the Lagna sign, count houses from it, and look at where Mars stands. If Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, the chart is called Manglik. The AnkShakti Kundali does this check for you and states the house Mars is in.
The 7th and 8th houses carry the most weight in older texts because they are the houses of partnership and of the marriage bond. Regional practice varies on the 2nd and the 12th, and some traditions leave one or both out.
What cancels it
Schools list several conditions. Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or its sign of exaltation (Capricorn) is widely read as softening the dosha. If both partners are Manglik, many families treat the two as balancing each other. Some add the aspect or conjunction of Jupiter.
Because the lists differ from one lineage to another, a family astrologer's view carries weight here. A calculator can only tell you where Mars is and which rule applies.
How it is used in matching
Mangal dosha is checked next to the 36 point Guna Milan score, not instead of it. A high Guna score with a Manglik chart on one side only is the case families ask about most.
The honest reading is that the dosha is one factor out of many. Habits, communication, family and time spent together are not in the chart.
Checking it on your own chart
Make your Kundali, open the Doshas section and read the line for Mangal dosha. It states the house Mars occupies and the rule it applied. If you are matching two charts, run the same check on both and then use the Kundali Milan tool for the Guna score.

Common questions
- Is Mangal dosha always bad?
- No. Tradition reads it as a pattern that asks for care in marriage. Many Manglik people are married happily, and the chart alone cannot say how a relationship will go.
- Does Mangal dosha go away with age?
- Some texts say its effect weakens after the age of 28, a view that is not shared by every school. Treat it as a regional belief.
- Can two Manglik people marry?
- Yes. A common view is that two Manglik charts balance each other.
- Does the Moon sign also matter for Mangal dosha?
- Some schools count Mars from the Moon as well as from the Lagna. The AnkShakti check follows the Lagna rule and notes that other schools add the Moon and Venus.
