How D9 is built
Each sign is 30 degrees. Divide it by nine and each part is 3 degrees 20 minutes. The first part of Aries is Aries, the second Taurus and so on in order. For fire signs the count starts at Aries, for earth signs at Capricorn, for air signs at Libra and for water signs at Cancer.
The AnkShakti Kundali does this for every planet and for the Lagna, and draws the Navamsa chart next to the birth chart.
What D9 is used for
Marriage and the partner: the 7th house of D9, Venus and the Lagna lord of D9 are looked at for the relationship. Strength: a planet strong in D9 is read as able to deliver its D1 promise. Dharma: the chart is also read for inner purpose.
It is also used to check dasha planets. If the lord of the running dasha sits well in D9, its period is read more kindly.
Vargottama and other signs of strength
A planet that is in the same sign in both D1 and D9 is called vargottama and is read as especially strong. A planet that is debilitated in D1 but well placed in D9 is read as improving, a pattern called Neecha Bhanga in some schools.
These readings are conventions that vary by lineage, so treat them as pointers.
Reading D9 with D1
Never read D9 alone. D1 shows what is promised, and D9 shows how well the promise holds. Look at the same planet in both charts, then check the Lagna of each, and use the planet table to see the Navamsa sign beside every planet.

Common questions
- Is D9 more important than D1?
- No. D1 is the main chart. D9 supports and refines it.
- Does D9 need an accurate birth time?
- Yes. The Navamsa Lagna changes about every 13 minutes, so a time error moves it quickly.
- What does D9 show about marriage?
- Tradition reads Venus, the 7th house and its lord in D9, together with the D1 7th house. It is a pointer, not a prediction.
- Are there other divisional charts?
- Yes. D10 for career and D7 for children are two examples. D9 is the most widely used.
